This retablo is inspired by the Cathedral of Our Lady of Rouen in Northern France. The design is influenced by the cathedral’s overall structure and in particularly by the tones of the Tour du Beurre. It has been made using the traditional techniques for the preparation of materials, assembly, carving and gilding employed by the ancient masters of Gothic art.

The wooden structure is constructed with kiln-dried pine. The joints are made with wooden dowels using glues of animal origin. All the carving is done by hand using gouges and chisels. The wooden base is then coated with gesso and primed with bole clay to prepare the surfaces before the painting and water gilding is carried out.

The retablo is painted using high-quality natural pigments to produce tones prevalent in the Middle Ages, and without any chemicals that could alter original colors. The ancient medium of egg tempera is used on some parts of the retablo.

The painting is oil on wood panel. Appropriate patinas are used to produce to give the artwork an aged look comparable to an original medieval retablo.
