New York artist and sand painter, Joe Mangrum. The exhibit includes exciting original permanent sand paintings, utilizing Mangrum’s signature technique of binding colored sand on canvas and carved-relief wood panels, as well as a selection of conceptual artifacts from years of creating paintings and large-scale installations. Mangrum’s work combines a rich library of cultural patterns combined with nature, science and technology in spontaneous abstract compositions.
Joe Mangrum’s ephemeral sand paintings are known around the world. Having completed over 1000 dynamic sand paintings in public spaces, audiences have been engaged in New York and around the globe. A graduate of The School of the Art Institute Chicago, Mangrum’s work has been featured in The Museum of Art and Design, New York, MOCA, North Miami, de Young Museum in San Francisco, Doe Museum in The Netherlands and Sunshine Museum in Beijing, Asia Society, New York, and created an ephemeral sand painting for Flag Art Foundation’s “Watch Your Step” He is also a recipient of the Lorenzo Di Medici award in new media at the Florence Biennale.
