About the artwork:
In this painting, the character is caught in a moment of reflection about who he is. He decided to try on some clothes escaping from the city’s bustle and the intrusive ringing of the phone, to slow down for at least a moment and think: how to mix his outfits and stand out from others. The only spectator and advisor is his dog, to whom he can appear without a mask, vulnerable and vacillating. The clothes chosen by the young man are both a way of self-expression and self-protection. Fashion for this person is a non-verbal language to convey a message knowing an addressee tuned to the same channel will receive it. The character sincerely believes in fashion’s ability to heal people from fear of rejection and alienation. Therefore, the Birkin bag acts as a talisman, amulet, or icon – no matter what you call it. It is sewn with a saddle stitch that helps to retain its structure and construction. The saddle seam is invisible; it is hidden inside the skin. But it creates the frame. It is the core and the DNA of this bag. The same core the character wants to maintain within himself, to preserve this feeling, when he later leaves the room. ‘Vintage dreams’ was inspired by visiting vintage stores where the subtle combination of craft and inspiration in clothing and accessories made me think once again about finding my origins. What makes you yourself? Fate or your imagination? Is fashion a liberation from old skin, or is it an invisible build-up of new layers of the same skin?”

About the Artist
Russian artist Constantin (Costa) Gorelov explores people’s feelings and psychological states, often depicting them through the interaction of the figure with space, items, and fashion. The last attribute is paramount to the artist’s self-expression. It is also a symbol linking epochs, times, and traditions.

Costa has exhibited domestically and internationally. His works are in private collections in Russia and throughout the world. One of his paintings, “Something About The Sea Locked Up,” is in the permanent collection at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Moscow, Russia.
