Banana Republic, the second of GATSBY’s “Welcome Home” series portrays a picture of Curious George in front of a deforested piece of the Amazon rain forest is burning off of the canvas as George rebelliously ‘flips the bird’ at The Man In The Yellow Hat.
The term “banana republic” is used to describe politically unstable countries (often in Central & South America that are heavily reliant on the export of natural resources & minerals. They are typically ran by ruling elites that treat the government as their own personal enterprises and deplete the natural resources available to them at alarming rates.
Deforestation and loss of biodiversity have led to high risks of irreversible changes to the Amazon’s tropical forests. It has been suggested that deforestation is reaching a tipping point after which large scale desertification of the Amazon will take place, with catastrophic consequences for the world’s climate, due to a self perpetuating collapse of the region’s biodiversity and ecosystems.
A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this (and every piece from the “Welcome Home” series) will be donated to The World Wildlife Fund.
