The Cloisters, a branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is the only museum in America that is dedicated to European Medieval art. This small garden in the center of four French cloisters is a quiet and contemplative place to visit. My spring venture there in 2020 was accompanied by rain and grey skies that confirmed a somber mood, mid-pandemic. The image of a lone tree, centered in one arch and rain dripping down to the slate paths in another echoed the sadness our world was living. I found a poignant connection to that singled out tree, darkened by the season, yet waiting to bloom.
