This original painting is from the Chinatown series showing Pell Street in lower Manhattan, full of Chinese restaurants and shops, in one of the oldest areas of New York.

Tim Saternow’s paintings explore the gritty industrial streets of New York; the old dignified houses of Provincetown; and the empty spaces of the High Desert around Joshua Tree, California.

Tim Saternow, an Emmy nominated art director for TV and films, and a theatre lighting & set designer, is extremely sensitive to the emotive power of light, while playing across the faces of the old houses, warehouses, and train trestles.   I also find energy and timelessness in the rust, stains and patina of these old locations, and the stories they tell.

I paint a moment, with light and shadow, and I make the city quiet.
