I’ve always loved Hopper and find that we have much in common as painters. Most all of his paintings revolve around people -as mine do. His models are not necessarily ‘pretty’ but have the feel of being real and down to earth. I can resonate with that. I decided to do a series of copies of his paintings adding some of my own more impasto style and keeping my painting a different size than his. I’ve read about him, have seen shows of his works over the years and even painted on the same streets where he did. I think he and I have a ton in common. I have many favorite artists throughout history but if I had to boil it down I would say Hopper and Van Gogh. What they have in common is how they painted ‘honestly’ without trying to wow the viewer with splashy technique or painting ‘beautiful people’.
