Iceberg Lake is a tiny gem, a full two-day hike from a trailhead near Mammoth, CA in the High Sierra. The lake is very small and deep but the water is crystal clear because it sits at an elevation of 10,239 feet, well above the tree line. It was a breezy day so the refractions of the boulders below the surface were sculpted nicely.
The creative process is unique, all by hand. A twelve-color pigment print on Somerset Velvet is affixed to board and sealed with a clear-coat for UV protection. No glass is needed, and the image is float mounted in a hardwood maple frame. The result is striking color, clarity and an uncanny three-dimensionality.
Most of my work is drawn from nature, but I enjoy creating images whose origins may not be readily clear. This kind of abstract view often leads to artworks that are peaceful and relaxing, but also a bit mysterious.
