“Why?” was created in 2019 by master oil painter René Cheng.
Cheng started this artwork “Why?” under the invitation to celebrate the 500th anniversary of Leonardo Da Vinci, under the theme: the dehumanization of humanity. Cheng normally does not like to paint sad or tragic scenes or make political or social statements, but as an advocate for the underdog, he is very outspoken.
“Why?” obviously says it all. Why do we allow suffering, drought, displacement, war, injustice, abandonment, child abuse, poverty, hunger, etc. ???? Why? The artist does not only want to confront the observer, but actively asks: “What are you doing about this? Which is your contribution to the world?” – The artist wants to put up for auction this painting at a mayor auction house and donate the proceeds to an aid organization.
