While working with purely abstract images, I refined my technique of first applying layers of color (underpainting) and then covering the entire surface with thin, vertical, hand-painted lines of varying opacity, creating a unique interplay between colors, light, and texture.
Living in such diverse places as the Lower East Side and SOHO in Manhattan (NYC), the West Indies, and the American Southwest, I have always been inspired by local culture, architecture, design, and landscape. While spending summers in and eventually moving to New Mexico, I have explored many of the most important ancient Puebloan sites in the Southwest. I began to incorporate these subjects into my art while maintaining its distinctive style.
Cliff Palace at Mesa Verde National Park is the largest cliff dwelling in North America. From the rim top overlooks, the collection of rooms, plazas, and towers fits perfectly into the sweeping sandstone overhang that has largely protected it since the thirteenth century. Some of the finest masonries in Cliff Palace appear in multistory square or round structures now called “towers”. At sunrise and sunset when the light hits the painting, it sparkles and glows!
