This is part of my new series of horse “portraits.”  I recently expanded my repertoire to include horse portraits in addition to horses with riders, either standing or sitting.  I approach these paintings the same way I do a human portrait, which is that I paint them until a psychological profile emerges. I like building faces, be they horse or human, and then watching them go wild.  I bring them back and reassemble them in some order.  I collect the scattered pieces and fragments of a nose here, an eye, a mouth and the reassembly is not always realistic.  On the contrary, the usual order I start out with changes continually, finally revealing a personality or essence I am looking for.  Then I know the painting is done.
