Basquiat’s final notebook was found when he died and the background of this piece is scanned copies from it. You can literally see him becoming unhinged if you read through the notes & study the drawings in the background. The phone number on the bottom right was reportedly his heroin dealers. GATSBY used the image of Jean-Michel as a boxer to portray the fight he lost with his demons/addiction.
