Edward Hopper has been an inspiration to me during my entire 35 year painting life. I’ve seen many shows of his work over the years and live in the same neighborhood as he did in NYC’s Greenwich Village. In this painting I like the way the broad stroke of light behind the figure is contrasted with the dark side of her. Also you can see how the lighted side of her is contrasted against the dark of the wall: common and effective techniques. Most of the female models in his paintings happen to be his wife Jo! The story goes that she wasn’t very keen on him painting other women.
