“The Empty Glass” is an original painting in acrylic with some other stuff mixed in and is part of my “Stories Tell Stories” series. In the painting, we see a bowl of fruit and a vase with some “Royal Wedding” flowers….possibly. It’s a little hard to tell, isn’t it. But that doesn’t really matter because the focus is clearly on that empty glass sitting on the table. Why would anyone leave a glass there like that? Maybe “nature called” and the hostess had to leave the glass and just go. Or possibly someone rang the doorbell or slammed the door knocker a bit too hard, “They’re hear…”, the hostess would have called before setting the glass down and rushing to the door to greet her guests. Or maybe everyone has already arrived and they have their drinks and the hostess forgot that tonight and every night from now on, they would be one guest short.
The abstract/expressionistic art is constructed of layers of paint and other mediums. Texture is added or created by scraping, scratching, layering, and using anything I can find to add or remove paint. One of my favorite tools is a kitchen fork so if you can usually find a spot on every painting where a fork has been drug through the paint.
As a primarily self-taught artist, the meaning of most of my work comes through the act of creating it. It is the physical act of getting my hands dirty by applying paint and other materials to create an image that is full of energy, texture, and sometimes wonder. I try not to take myself or my paintings too seriously but I try to thank God every day for His creation and for the desire and ability to create.
